However, despite its acceptance, it was long debated in the scientific community because the leading ("fixist") theory still envisaged a static Earth without moving continents up until the major break–throughs of the early sixties. The movement of tectonic plates is most evident at the boundaries between the plates. The South China Sea opened as Borneo moved away from China. Therefore, when various scientists during the early sixties started to reason on the data at their disposal regarding the ocean floor, the pieces of the theory quickly fell into place. The project will be done with the Ontario Geological Survey, which is located on the Laurentian campus. This supercontinent cycle – the assembly, rupture, breakup, spreading and reassembly -- has left an indelible record on the geology of the Pacific Northwest.

Ortelius' idea surfaced again in the 19th century. The second type of plate boundary occurs where plates slide past one another along transform faults. Overlying the basement and Tertiary rocks are Quaternary shelf and slope deposits. The claimed correlations have been largely qualitative and subjective, and are therefore highly suspect; virtually no effort has been made to test them quantitatively by transforming them to the pole (i.e. recalculating each magnetic profile to a common latitude).

The plate shares a boundary with the Eurasian Plate, the African Plate, the Arabian Plate and the Aegean Sea Plate. As the twin sheets of oceanic crust expand from the mid-ocean ridge, the Atlantic sea-floor spreads and the Americas get farther away from Africa and Europe. Both splits pinch out at the notch (right), which first and foremost marks the local absence of rollback and extension. Most transform faults occur where oceanic ridges are offset on the sea floor. In this symposium, Edward Bullard and co-workers showed with a computer calculation how the continents along both sides of the Atlantic would best fit to close the ocean, which became known as the famous "Bullard's Fit". It's time to give up on the idea of hot spots being fixed.

It might seem strange that a solid material can flow. Where ocean plates collide with each other, subduction builds a volcanic island arc. Thus, the lithosphere has a highly complex and irregular structure. The particularly hot basaltic lava that erupts at such localities has such low viscosity that it can flow tens to hundreds of kilometres across the landscape.
