A little more than a month after his enlistment, Tucker was mustered into Company C of the 6th Michigan Cavalry, one of four regiments that formed the Michigan Cavalry Brigade. Ordered to Franklin, La., January 4, 1864, and duty there until April. The fort was the site of a twelve-day siege by the Union army during the U. Approximately 3,000 Confederate Georgians under Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb were lined up in multiple ranks behind the stone wall for about 600 yards, and another 3,000 were atop the slope behind it, along with their artillery.
