Articles aimed at this section should be intellectually stimulating, conceptually rigorous, critical and above all agenda-setting. For our majors, this will include a knowledge base in the following areas: This course examines the development of the two major parties from 1789 to the present. Readings include Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, as well as Machiavelli’s Prince and Plato’s Meno. In recent years collaborative faculty-student work has included studies of post-conflict development projects in Indonesia; research on the distributional consequences of social programs; surveys of employers and labor unions; studies on the effects of electoral competition, partisanship, and crisis on policymaking; studies of religion and voting; analyses of cabinet turnover; analyses of inequality across ethnic groups; and analyses of presidential power in the postcommunist world.
