The book is lavishly illustrated by photographs taken specifically by Dr Raymond Parks, Honorary Curator of the Edinburgh University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments. $159. It offers superb sound and due to the design it’s a lovely instrument for any beginner. Pitched in C (an octave below the oboe), the bassoon is the largest of the double reed instruments. But it also has an older Selmer French barrel with it (59 mm) that works very well. Many pieces for wind ensemble have bass saxophone parts, especially pre-1950 pieces.

It's a good and little-used example from Buffet's "Golden Era". The passage moves to B-flat. 7:43 [m. 80]--A harmonized blast of the fanfare from winds and horns is followed by a string response. Only a few years old, it has yet to be offered as "standard equipment" by any of the major bassoon manufacturers. Judith Leclair, American bassoonist, is the principal bassoon with the New York Philharmonic and a faculty member at the Julliard School. In addition, the French Horn has always been considered a member of the woodwinds, having been originally used with flute, oboe and bassoon before the addition of the clarinet to the orchestra.

Antonio Cesti included a bassoon in his 1668 opera Il pomo d’oro (The Golden Apple). You can also check with a tuning meter, or by comparing with a (well tuned) keyboard. Except for a brief 1940s wartime conversion to ball bearing manufacture, the Heckel concern has produced instruments continuously to the present day. The point is that brass instruments in general sound better when miked at distances from 2-6' or more, with the mic aimed roughly 30-40� off-axis from the center of and positioned a few inches above or below the bell.

Pre-1930 Selmer clarinets are often superb, play not unlike modern instruments and very much unlike the later �big bore� instruments. The clarinet uses a single reed made of one piece of wood, while the oboe and bassoon use a double reed made of two pieces joined together. Placement for reed instruments takes a bit more thought.
